Canyon Lake Guide Report & the Highland Chain of Lakes

Water clear; 69 degrees; 907' (2' low):

Bass are beginning to migrate into bays following shad toward flats leading to feeder creeks. Expect to see schooling activity in these areas sooner, rather than later. Best lure choices are going to be Bleeding Shad Rat-L-Traps, Terminator spinnerbaits or buzzbaits, shad-imitating swim baits like Creme Lures' 2" Spoiler Shad worked along the breaklines of flats leading to
creeks. But currently...

Largemouth to 5 lbs are fair to good on windy mainlake points and in timber 5'-12' deep on pumpkinseed 4" rootbeer JDC Strike Grubs, Texas rigged pumpkin Ring Worms, watermelon-red Whacky Sticks on jigheads and banging white crankbaits into stumps in 4'-8' of water. Upriver, numbers and size of bass are better. The topwater bite has improved a lot so try a popper like a watermelon or pumpkin JDC Skip-N-Pop/Pop R, Tiny-T buzzbaits, 4" or 5" Whacky Sticks, 6" Scoundrel worms and of course, a 1/4 oz. white-chartreuse spinnerbait.

Smallmouth are very good to 5 lbs. over rock piles and along bluff ledges
in 4'-15' using 3/16 oz. pumpkin Terminator jigs w/Smokin' Green Devil's Tongue for a trailer and pumpkin seed 5" JDC Drop Shot Worms on drop shot rigs. Optional lures are smoke tubes and 4" curl tail grubs both rigged on jigheads and fished from 5'-15' deep.

Stripers are slow moving up the water column following shad coming
shallower. Surface feeding action will begin as the water temperature
drops and stays in the lower 60's. When it does, try white or Albino
Snap Back soft jerkbaits rigged on a weighted 5/0 Bait Jerker Hook by
Falcon Lures, Zara Spook/Pencil Poppers or Rattlin' Rogues and vertically
jig a 1/2-1 oz. Pirk Minnow, or simply drift live bait through the schools.

Crappie are improving in the river on minnows and white crappie jigs.

Lake Buchanan: Water clear; 68 degrees; 1014' (6' Low)

Some of the best bass fishing of the year is about to take place on this lake when the fish school up by year class to follow shad on their migration into creeks and feeder arms. During the "fall feeding frenzy" the most productive lures (motion lures - AKA Bubba baits) and techniques ( power fishing) will be blue shad or white Terminator spinnerbaits with double willow leaf blades,
Tiny-T buzzbaits, 1/4 oz. Rat-l-Traps and 2" Spoiler Shads made by Creme Lures worked parallel to and just above breaklines of flats in creeks. Right now..

Largemouth are good to 5.5 lbs. tight to stumps and laydowns on mainlake points in 5'-12' pitching pumpkin Terminator jigs with pork trailers, Texas rigged red shad Craw Tubes and junebug worms.

Stripers are fair to good from Flag Island to the Lighthouse over 30' holes drifting live bait, casting then ripping Rattlin' Rogues or Pencil Poppers and vertically jigging Pirk Minnows.

Lake LBJ: Water stained; 69 degrees; 824.98' (full):

Power fishing is improving daily as bass begin their annual schooling
activity; i.e., gorging on large schools of shad migrating toward and
into creeks, pockets and coves. Motion lures like Terminator spinner-
baits, Rat-L-Traps, JDC Skip-N-Pop topwaters/ Pop R's & small buzzbaits.
Largemouth are very good along breaklines of flats and sloping
points using 1/4 oz. Bleeding Shad Rat-L-Traps, Texas rigged
black-blue back Scoundrel worms and chartreuse-blue back medium
running crankbaits. Boulders along creek channels and deep water
boat docks are producing some quality fish pitching watermelon-red
Snap Back creature baits and 5" JDC Craws on jigheads.

Crappie are fair to good on brushpiles along boat docks on minnows.
