As per my knowlwdge following are.......

Black bass should not be confused with a multitude of unrelated fish species found around the world and called "bass", such as the butterfly Peacock Bass (Cichla ocellaris), speckled Peacock bass (Cichla temensis), Papuan Black Bass (Lutjanus goldiei) (also called Niugini bass), Australian bass, Rock bass (Ambloplites rupestris), American Striped Bass, and British sea bass.

Thanks.

Interesting, I never knew the American striped bass is not in the true "bass family". I assume that means both white bass and hybrids are distant cousins as well?

Birdman,
Actually stripers are true bass. The "black basses" are members of the sunfish family. Which would include; Largemouth, smallmouth, red eyed bass, suwannee (sp) shoal bass, guadelupe bass, rock bass, spotted bass. I'm relatively certain wipers, yellows, whites are true basses.
