Fly Fishing for Bass

Anyone out there do it? I've heard from a few it is blast, thinking about trying it out. My dad has a rig he used to use, however I'm scared if I touch it, it will turn to dust

If you've done it, what are your recommendations for equipment?

Marvin,
I do a bit of bass fishing with the long rod. Both smallmouth (my favorite) and largemouth. I use a 6wt in a small river occasionally but My 7 wt is a better choice for larger or heavier flies.
When fishing largemouth I generally use my 8wt because the bigger flies take more rod to cast.

I bet catching those smallies with a fly rod is unreal!!

I know how hard they fight with baitcasting stuff, I could only imagine with a fly rod.

Bass love fly rods. If you get a chance, try the new Sage "Smallmouth" and the "Largemouth" rods. They are shorter so they conform to BASS Tournament regulations and come with a special heavy fly line.

The rods were designed for the delta area of California and Mexico largemouth. Sweet.... easy to toss the largest flys. I fished with one of the designers. After using his rods, I had to have one. My son regularly uses a fly rod in our club tournaments.

We catch a lot of peacock bass on flyrods. I like a 5wt because I use smaller flys. If the wind picks up I may use a 6, 7, or even an 8wt rod.

Comparing the lure fisherman to the fly fisherman......
My dad use to say (and I've come to agree) "The Fly Fisherman may not catch the largest bass, but he'll sure catch the most."

Doesn't get much better than bass on the fly. I have a 9'6" 7 wt I toss bass bugs with. I agree with Bamboo though that an 8 wt would be ideal though. Can be tough to get those big flies out where you want them. I fish my grandpa's farm ponds in Texas with a fly rod. I highly recommend this to anyone fishing farm ponds. Most difficult part of it is finding a good assortment of flies....

If you haven't had a bass hit a dry fly yet, you're really missing out. Playing them on a fly reel is a blast too. i have the reel break off and just "feel" the bass and use my palm to "cool his boots". I typically fish for trout these days, but there is a creek about 3 hours from here (Catskills Creek) that members of the NYC Trout Bums hit up on an annual basis. Lots of really great bass fishing on flies in a beautiful environment.

I'd typically use my 6 wt. There are flies call "Bass Crack" that work really well, but I also like tarantulars or grashoppers. Basically anytihng with legs that can make a bit of a "plop" on the water.

I also know several people that go to Brazil for Peacock Bass. Haven't been yet, but my wife is from Brazil, so its only a matter of time. Nice.

Great pics!

Aloha,
Stan
