My Rifle for Elk Hunting

I got my new rifle yesterday. I bought a Savage 7mm WSM with a Nightforce 3.5 x 15 x 50 rifle scope and a Harris bipod from Gene Sears Supply.

You can buy all three of them along with the flip up lens covers, etc. online at the 3G Shooting Supply Store.

I've attached a picture for your viewing pleasure. This is the rifle that I will be bagging a world class bull elk with next weekend.

BJ from 3G Shooting Supply is a good friend of mine and he's married to my wife's best friend from college.

He mounted the rifle scope for me and even went out and sighted the thing in for me on his lunch break.

I'm gonna take it out and shoot it at the range tomorrow with dnmelch. I friggin' can't wait.

I used a Savage 7mm Ultra Mag last year and I loved it. There's not much difference between the rifles but the Nightforce Scope with the illuminated reticle is definitely a step up from the Leupold scope I used last year.

The Harris Bipod is the exact same bipod I used last year.

I'm gonna take along a camera and my wireless card and attempt to update an Elk Hunting Thread as often as I can...depending on if we have any reception on the mountain or not. Last year it was pretty spotty. We're camping in a different spot this year so hopefully it will be better.

Nice looking rifle. Your scope looks a bit heavy for my type of hunting here in the Colorado mountains, but should do really well at longer ranges. How did you'r hunt go?

Thanks. It turned out to be more like a camping trip than a hunting trip.

The scope is not all that heavy, but the bipod sure is. I ditched the bipod after day 2 but did use it on the last day. Depends on how much walking you're going to do I guess.

Sorry you didn't have better luck. It sounds like my hunt this year. I did get a 4 pointer in 2007 but only saw 2 cows for about 5 seconds this year.

Yep, I think we saw 4 cows for about 10 seconds. That was it. Lots of sign. Lots of tracks. Several fresh scrapes. No living breathing bull elk.
