Is 30-06 big enough?

I just purchased a springfield 30-06 for hunting big game. I was wondering if it is adequate for elk. I will use it on deer and antelope but I'm not sure if it has enough power to take down an elk?
Thanks
Jacab

Jacab,

Yes the 30-06 is capable of taking any animal in north america with well placed shots. I prefer people to bring a rifle to my hunting camp that they use all the time vs. some special rifle they bought just for the bigger animals. Chances are they are not as familiar with the rifle and can't shoot it as well as the one they use all the time.

The 30-06 would be a good all around caliber to buy for all your big game hunting it has proven itself for many decades.

Agreed, my father took a cow elk with his '06 this past season, it walked 30 yards before falling. You will want to consider your loads though, as the '06 can shoot a number of different loads (grains that is). Each one having its advantages from trajectories to knockdown power. We usually shoot lighter loads when hunting deer, and beef up the loads when hunting hogs or larger animals.

30-06 is more than capable of killing an Elk. Many people still use 30 30's with heavy grain. Most important aspect of any rifle regardless of what you are shooting is: 1) Distance you are comfortable shooting at with confidence, 2) Shooting within your comfort zone, and 3) Shot placement. Put all three together and your bound to be successful.

I only use a 30-06. Elk, Bear, Deer, you name it. Again loads are important. Also consider where you live to where you'll be hunting. If you live out east 100 yards is a long shot. Out West 200-250 yards is pretty standard. Might want to consider that when you sight in that scope.
