Fenced Elk Hunt - Would You?

I will never hunt within a high fence enclosure. My buddies and I were talking about it. What would it take for you to want to do this?

One guy would have to be in a wheelchair with the use of only one arm - another would with a primitive weapon like a spear.

It sounds crazy to me....what do you think?

If I have one more out-of-state empty tag in my pocket, after my next elk trip. I don't care if you lead it in front of me with a rope I'm going to shoot it!!

I wouldn't.

I know quite a few people who have though. My brother's friend has an Elk on his wall that he killed on a canned hunt. My brother took me in the guy's house to show me an awesome deer that he'd shot and I saw the Elk and was like, "wow, no way!" but he told me it was a fenced in operation and that he'd just paid to go and shoot the thing. Then I was unimpressed of course.

I don't have a problem with it. I mean, if you're going to kill the animal and someone's going to eat the meat, what's the difference in having a cow or hog butchered? Other than the fact that you're putting the animal on your wall possibly?

I wouldn't consider it hunting though.

What if you throw a different twist to the question:

How big a fenced in operation would it have to be for you to consider it fair chase?

What if it was one full square mile of high fence and you were just let loose in there to hunt for the day? Would that be considered fair chase? If yes, how small would you consider? If no, how big would it have to be?

I wouldn't. Even if I had the money to do that it would be just as easy to hire a great outfitter and have the experience and the elk.

Wow man,
Sounds like you're in the same boat as me! My deer season was just horrendous! I needed to kill a doe before I could shoot a buck. I had many days of sitting in my treestand watching buck after buck come into range. At one point after days of this nonscence I finally saw an antlerless deer moving through the brush between me and an oak flat where there had been a good amount of deer activity. I made ready, thinking "this is it!" "finally I'll get my doe tag filled and be able to take one of these bucks" I raised my bow just before the deer came into a shooting lane. Then I noticed a very short forked antker on the right side of his head . I slowly lowered my bow which, of course, he noticed. He casually looked up at me still chewing a mouth full of acorns. "hi" I said, he stopped chewing.... "Go get your mama" I said. He stared at me..."Dumbass" I said. he continued to stare. Boy, here was a deer clearly muddying the gene pool. He looked at me some more. He bobbed his head..."get lost" I said. He laid his ears back and turned broadside to me at less than 10 yards. He stood there for a few moments then wagged his tail and turned slightly quartering away. wagging his tail he ambled slowly away leaving me to cry softly to myself. Shortly later a doe and her yearling fawn came by with a nice 8 pointer in tow. I waited for a shot at the doe or even her yearling fawn and as light began to disapear I finally got my shot at about 35 yards. Everything was perfect as i came to full draw settled my 40 yard bin low on her chest and smoothly sent an arrow RIGHT INTO THE ONLY BRANCH between me and her.
Things were pretty grim but they soon got better. At dark I lowered my bow to the ground and started to climb down. When I reached what I thought was ground level I casually stepped out into space and dropped the remaining 5 feet to the ground. I had opportunity to reflect on my day as I lay in the leaves trying to breath and checking for broken bones. Yeah, tie one up and tell me where you'd like me to shoot it. At this point I think I've paid my dues.

That is a pretty good ending Bamboo. Sounds like the luck I have been having lately.

The last bass fishing tourney I was in, we went pre-fishing and just tore their heads off. The day of the tourney started off pretty good I was netting fish left and right for my partner (my dad), and I couldn't buy a bite. It came down to the last hour and I had contributed one little keeper. So I throw my crankbait out and wham, one nails it, I can feel it just shaking her head and I knew it was a good one. So I holler for the net and the fish runs right to the boat, and then turns and goes to dive deep and like a idiot I try to horse her to the boat and rip the crankbait right out of her.

Probably a thousand dollar fish the way we had it figured. Chalk that one up to the dumb*** catergory

It's not for me and if somebody else wants to do it, fine, but don't call it something it's not, hunting.

Good question

Ya know, thats a good question. I guess if you are in Utah, you are always hunting a fenced in area. Seems to me, that even when you think you are on public land out here, you run into a fence with no tresspassing signs on it. So I figure its all fenced in hunting. And in areas where you dont see any fences, you can forget about seeing an elk because there are so many other hunters in the area that I wouldnt dare shoot. Hey, Im bashing on my own state.
