Just wondering about Out of State Elk hunters.

I am just wanting to get a idea about how many people actually come out west to elk hunt every year. Since I live in Colorado, I was wanting to know where people go to elk hunt, because last year there didn't seem to be to many out of state hunters around here?
Thanks.

We put in for New Mexico and have been drawn the last two years. If we don't get drawn in New Mexico this year we'll be heading your way to Colorado to hunt over the counter.

I think you are right. Colorado DOW data from 2008 showed a decrease in out of state hunters, and my bet is there will be an even greater drop in 2009. There will have to be some serious belt tightening at DOW because of this.

You are right about less competition, but with lower revenue the DOW as an Enterprise Agency in Colorado and receiving no state funding may be forced to raise liscense fees, and my guess is it will fall harder on out of state hunters. Otherwise there will be cuts in staffing and managment of the state's wildlife.

Can't agree with you more Boltman. Decreased hunter numbers will have a huge impact on Colorado's DOW resources. Big game seasons are the bread winner for the majority of the state's wildlife budget. Colorado is one of a handful of states that completely funds all activities through licensing and fees. No direct state tax dollars or fed money supports them. I would imagine the first programs to go will be habitat improvement and land purchases though. I'm not sure they can afford to raise rates in this economy. They do this, and they risk further decreases in hunter numbers as they'll be out pricing many hunters.

They would have to eventually drop tag prices wouldn't they? I'm more of a forestry guy but after a few years of hunting drop offs the elk population would allow more hunting. Wouldn't it make sense to lower the price and get more people in after that?

If herd increases, they won't drop the price, they'll allot more tags in the limited draw areas.
