Elk hunting diary day one new mexico

Yesterday morning we glassed and saw 12 to maybe 20 head of elk. We moved locations and then they were gone. This morning, we are there but there is so much fog visibility is zero.

Unseasonably warm in the afternoons the last two days, maybe up to 70. Below freezing at night.

It's just above freezing right now. Hopefully this fog will lift shortly.

Feeling much better today. Fog finally lifted but not until around 9 give or take.
Didn't see anything. So we are oh for one so far. Just had lunch. Gonna snag a quick nap and head back out.

Well I found out this morning that it is possible for the wind to blow away from you IN EVERY DIRECTION!

I haven't given up yet however I have come to terms with the fact that I'm like leaving here for the third year in a row without an elk.

It's only halfway through day two, but I'm already mentally beaten.

I can sum up the evening hunt in two words: expletive expletive.

That's one word twice, but you get the point.

Well this morning was a waste but we did find a great new spot way away from everything. We glassed all afternoon and finally they showed up.

The only problem was they were about 1800 yards away and it was rough going. By the time we got there they were gone. They kinda had just stopped in the open park as an aside it seemed on their way to lower ground for the evening.

I'd say there were 30 cows and maybe three shootable bulls. There was one that was a decent linking six by six bull. They bugled a ton this morning so we knew where they were. Seems like the cows are not quite done yet because the big bull appeared to be fending off a satellite bull maybe. Hard to tell.

Tomorrow could be eventful!

My mood has improved and I'm now at least slightly optimistic.

Nothing this morning and we got stormed out this evening. Weather changed quick! Hauled ass back to camp in lightning and heavy sleet.

Been snowing like crazy ever since. Elk hunting turned to self preservation pretty quick.

Tomorrow is our last day but it's not looking too good.

We were prescient enough to pack up what we didn't need and take half the tent down and put chains on the tires before we went out for the evening hunt.

It amazes me how quick the weather changes in this elevation.

3 years in a row with no elk but damn I'm learning and for sure gaining an appreciation for elk hunting on your own. When I finally do take an elk, it will be one heck of a time!
