2008 Colorado Sheep and Goat Applications Available

Applications for Colorado's 2008 bighorn sheep and mountain goat seasons are now available on the website of the Colorado Division of Wildlife.

Nonresident fees are $1,764 for mountain goat, and another $1,764 for bighorn sheep. Colorado also offers a small number of Desert Sheep tags, but these are resident-only.

To draw a tag in Colorado, you'll need to apply for 3 years, without a chance of drawing, to build prefence points. Once you have 3 preference points, you are eligible to draw. For every year you're eligible and you do not draw, you get a bonus point for the next year's draw.

It will take a while to draw in Colorado, but I feel that it's one of the more attractive opportunities for goats and Rocky Mountain bighorns in The West.

Expensive to say the least!! There's not that many tags allocated year to year (you could count them on 1 hand in most units). I could put you on several trophy class rams if there were tags allocated for their units. I'll post some pics of them when I get home.

just curious what percent of hunters drawn in acctually take a sheep or ram? Is it worth putting in for and paying that much?

As requested, here is the hunt recap taken off of the Colorado DOW website for big horn sheep. As you can see, not that many tags are issued. Note that only a few of Colorado hunt units are even listed as giving tags out (not exactly sure how many units there are, but there's a heck of a lot more than listed) Hunter success seems pretty good in most areas.

probably 50 feet from the closest ones and 100 yards from the others. There were 3 separate groups this day and they were all looking up hill at the next group? It made for a tough picture.
