Quail hunting

went last saturday. found two coveys in about 3 hrs. Not the worst but definitely not the best either. both coveys had about 15 birds in them.

i've been hunting around central oklahoma. I think the birds here are kinda spotty. I've some good reports out west, but haven't out there yet so i dont know for sure. the last couple of years up north and west around ft. supply areas have been pretty good, but this year the same guys say they cant find any. I think overall the quail population is going down every year. I dont know what anybody can do about either. I just dont think we'll ever see it real good anymore

I'm not sure if you are totally right? The wildlife dep. is doing all they can to help with the growth of the quail population. There is also an organization called quail unlimited. They specialize in the growth and habitat of Quail. If that isn't enough you can always resort to pen raised birds. I have never hunted them myself but know several people who have, and they said that it was great for their dogs and was also very intertaining.

i've never hunted pen raised either, but when i watch shows on t.v. they have literally kick the birds up. You wont see that in western ok. Those birds will just flat run away from you sometimes they are amazing how far they will run before they will fly

Quail population in Southwest Ks is off the hook this year. I don't believe i've seen this good of numbers EVER. The relatively mild winter last year, appropriate hatch conditions, and bird carry-over must have all been optimal. It seems the CRP program in this area has done wonders for the quail population.

thank you for the info birdman. I'm glad to know there are birds somewhere. In my opinion the quail population this year is terrible, but there does seem to be a few more birds than last year. Now on the other hand the pheasant population in the panhandle of Oklahoma is unreal.
