Kansas pheasant opener

Went back home last weekend for the opener. Had pretty good success on Saturday and we couldn't have asked for better weather. We bagged 37 which was 3 shy of our 10 man limit. No reason for not filling other than poor shooting on our part. All birds were taken in cover. Sunday was a little different story though. It was pissing rain all day long. The birds were in there typical "funk" pattern when this occurs. They couldn't figure out if they wanted in the cover or if they should feed all day long. Most chose the latter and stayed in bare feed all day long which made it very difficult to hunt.

One thing I did notice this year was the number of people out. It was damn near combat hunting at a couple of our spots. Luckily enough, most don't understand pheasants as well as we do and we capitalized.

For future reference, pheasants almost always (except in bad weather) fly out of cover first thing in the morning to go feed. Most people immedietely jump into the weeds. Your better off to sleep in and head out around 10:00. We hunted some fields that already had people through em' but just too early. We followed up around noon and slayed em'.

Cheers,
BM

are you going back for Thanksgiving or Christmas? I wouldn't mind killing a few birds.
