South Dakota pheasant hunting

Has anyone ever been pheasant hunting in South Dakota. I may have a chance to go this year and was just wandering if it is as good as advertised. It looks phenomanl on all the hunting shows I have seen.

Corry,

I've been hunting in South Dakota over the past 7 years or so. We hunt mainly on private ground around the Clark or Watertown area. We always have good shoots and there's a bazzillion birds. We've even done fairly well on occassion hunting walk-in. It's always a fun trip as we hunt new ground, different cover, and see new sites. I would have to say though the pheasant hunting in S.W. Kansas has been just as good or better the last few years...

Hey Todd is there very many birds in southeast Colorado? I thought that i had heard somewhere that there is pretty good hunting up there.

'There's probably a few areas with high bird concentrations, but there's not much farmland out there. Most of the terrain is pasture with some irregated land mixed in. You need to get a few miles east of the Co/Ks border before you start seeing lots of birds.

I was invited to hunt South Dakota last fall and had a great time. We only hunted the roadside ditches and a couple of the managment areas but got a limit each day. There were birds everywhere and it seemed that all the locals were pleased to see you, certainly I didn't meet anybody who wasn't friendly and helpful. I stayed in the Faulkton area and would recomend it.

AH, nothing better than being able to hunt roadsides... I was always impressed with the public areas in SD. Seems they develop very good habitat for healthy pheasant populations.

I got to go up there, but it's hard for me to spend that kind of money when I can go 4 1/2 hours and kill a limit everyday by noon

Although I agree with your logic Corry and have the same success in Kansas, let me tell you there's nothing quite like Dakota ditch chicken hunts. The pure numbers of birds are amazing. I've seen them get up and they literally black out the sky. The best part about any new hunt for me though is new terrain. Hunting in SD is nothing like the OK panhandle!!!
