I once knew this gentleman that was an avid catfisher. He spent every free moment chasing these fish. He was very successful in his outings and one day I asked how he was able to catch so many fish. He took me around the side of his house and showed me his secret. He would go to the feed store and buy several bags of grain (i.e. corn, wheat, barley etc.). He would add this seed to plastic 55 gal drums and fill about half full of water. He would let the sun “ferment” this grain until a pungent sour aroma developed. When he headed to the water, he would take several buckets of this mixture with him and fill panty hose with it. The panty hose were dropped over the side of the boat while he was out to attract the fish. In addition to this, he would occasionally throw several handfuls in the water. I’m not sure on legality of this in the state where it occurred, but sounded like a hell of an idea to me…

My dad talk about doing this several years ago but we never did it.
He knew a guy who did the same thing but put the grain in a milk jug and stabed holes in it.

I believe it is legal, at least in Kansas. There is a man and wife who own a small motel on Glen Elder lake in north central Kansas. They offer a combination room and guided fishing trip on their pontoon boat offering white bass and catfish, There have been several articles in the newspaper of their technique of baiting several holes around the lake, using soured grain etc.
