Tips on how to preserve your trophy for a lifetime

Danny Keener, a Choctaw taxidermist for 25 years, offers the following tips that hunters should follow to ensure the best mounts:

→Don’t drag your deer along the ground for any distance.

→Get the hide into a freezer as quickly as possible, especially when the weather is warm.

→Most taxidermists will skin and cape your deer as soon as you get it to them. If you can’t get your deer to a taxidermist immediately, go ahead and cape out your deer and place it in a plastic, waterproof bag and put it in the freezer.

→Don’t get the deer cape wet.

→If you need to keep it cool, be sure and double bag the hide and place ice around it. If you use dry ice, be sure and use some type of insulator so the dry ice doesn’t come in direct contact with the skin.

→Don’t carry the trophy around in the back of the pick-up for a few days to show it off. Take a photo and get it to the taxidermist.

Thats good advice. I would also like to know if there is anything you can do to preserve your mount after its finished.

I wouldn't know how to take care of one since I can't kill anything big enough to mount
