Buck Attacks but Loses

Mississippi Outdoors: Deer hunts hunter, but loses the duel
By Larry Rea, Memphis Commercial Appeal
Monday, January 12, 2009

Hunter vs. deer: Scott Webb, 41, of Ecru had a deer hunt to remember recently when he came face to face with an agitated seven-point buck. Curtis, who was hunting near Water Valley, says he was "attacked" by the buck while standing alongside a field. "He came straight at me before I knew what was going on," said Curtis, a stay-at-home dad with four children. "I tried to get my rifle up but it was on safety, and I just didn't have time before he was on me."

The deer was apparently enticed by the scent Webb was using (Tink's 69 Doe in Rut Buck Lure), according to Chad Dacus, deer program coordinator for the Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries and Parks. "I've heard of something like this happening and seen it on the Internet, but not recently in Mississippi. It sounds like he (Webb) was fortunate he wasn't hurt worse than he was." Webb sustained cuts and scrapes on his face and several body bruises.

"I could hardly move the next day I was so sore," Webb says. "I can tell you it scared me to death. I thought I wouldn't see my wife and kids again."

The tussle, Webb says, lasted less than two minutes as he held tight to the buck's antlers. Finally, the buck tossed Webb to the ground and was preparing to make one last attack when a spike and a doe came into the field. The buck left Webb and went after the doe.

Once Webb had gotten to his feet and gathered his thoughts he picked up his rifle and shot the retreating buck, which field-dressed at 180 pounds. "It's something I'll never forget," he said.

That would be freaky. I was in a situation one time stalking a buck. I was able to get soo close to him I just kept thinking of those videos you see where a buck beats that crap out of some guy. I was alittle scared. I'm not afraid to admit that.

This is one incident that makes me scared everytime I go out hunting, especially on night times. There would be a great possibility to meet some horrible incidents like this.
Keeping alert should always be on mind.
