First Deer

My first buck was a half rack fork. I shot the poor deer 6 times with a 30-06, would of shot him 7 but one shell was a dud and wouldn't fire. I mean wouldn't fire, trust me I must of reloaded that damn shell a hundred times! I had him wounded at about 10 yards walking parallel to me. I considered stabbing him with my survival knife several times. He finally laid down in some tall grass. This allowed my uncle (and hunting partner) to arrive. When he got there scared to death, ( he thought I shot myself, due to all of the yelling) he angrily said , what the hell are you yelling about. I said that I had a buck wounded in this tall grass, and he laughed. The grass was the size of a pitchers mound. He then asked if I wanted to barrow one of his shells, I was reluctant! He had a 243 and I a 30-06. After some discussion over that I trampled into the small plot of grass. Out into the open wheat field walked the more than half dead deer. Boom the shot rang off and dirt flew from ten feet above the deers body. Boom another shot,( both from 15 yards) rang and down the deer went. It was all over and our first deer was down. This was the first of a lifetime of my hunting adventures, with more to come.

As far as I can remember it anyway, it was a doe about 300 yards running straight away, after I thought I shot and killed the Black Panther and watched it roll (the one that doesn't exist in Oklahoma) chasing after about 10 deer in front of it.

I was sitting up on the hill by the fence and they'd all just crossed the creek and turned perpendicular giving me the perfect view.

I don't care what anyone says, it was a damn black panther. I don't know where it went or why it didn't die, but I shot it and it rolled. I went to see it, and then shot the doe.

That's my story and I'm sticking to it.

BTW, Drakehunter, I distinctly remember the deer crying out, still alive and you pulling out your knife to cut it's throat before I shot it again. Seriously Tackleberry, what were you thinking!

Man that was a long time ago. What were you, 15? Good times!

My first deer harvested, as i'm sure most are, was an unforgetable experience. I was 13 and my dad drew out a leftover doe tag for Kansas special doe season in January. The week of our hunt, one heck of an ice storm blew across the plains. We were hunting in eastern Ks, and barely made it there (of course we slid off the road several times while pulling a camper).

The most vivid memory of this hunt prior to shooting my doe was how damn cold it was sitting in a tree stand with my dad. A thick layer of ice coated everything in site. Time ticked by it seems in years rather than minutes. As a little fellow, I couldn't sit still, and this only compounded the problem of said ice. The deer weren't moving much that morning until the sun came up. And when it did, the temperatures rose with it. As the sun got higher and air warmer, all the ice buildup started falling off the trees. My head was on a swivel all morning as the ice falling around me couldn't be distinguished from animals moving or falling ice. I was soaking wet from all the ice melt and freezing cold. Just as we were about to leave due to my complaining, there we spotted the biggest deer I'd ever seen (an average size doe mind you).

She was fairly close, probably 100 yards away standing at a small watering hole. I took aim for about 5 minutes or until the shakes subsided enough to keep view of her through my scope and BOOM!!!! A magnificent shot, placed right through both hind quarters. She limped off 75 yards or so and laid down. The excitement was unbearable, and the 20 minute wait to climb out of the stand to go find her was unimaginably longer.

The whole experience was one i'll cherish for a lifetime and can't wait to pass along to my children. In my opinion, this is what hunting is all about. Getting future generations involved and the continual growth of our beloved sport.

my first deer i took was this winter in liberal while were hunting pheasants. that day i took my dads (now mine) 243. along with us. it was the last day of deer season in kansas and didnt have any luck with my bow so i took out the rifle. The whole week i went to my farm to see if i could hit one but had alot of construction going on at the time so the deer where ran out. but i did have a chance to shoot my first bobcat while i was there. so after we filled up our limit (like always with me along) we were driving past a wheat field and saw about 3 white tail does and 5 muleys. (i only had a white tail doe tag).but they were about 400 yards away standing underneath a sprinkler.but we still decided to take the shot.but threw all the comotions of geting the rifle and getting set up i forgot to load it and as i pulled the trigger it went ''click'' and then my heart started to pound even more so i load up the gun and aimed again. but this time it fired and i whacked the deer so hard that the deer jumped probably 5 feet in the air and took off and stopped about 200 yards later. we then crouched up to it and i had to shoot it a few more times but now i'm snacking on it in my freezer.
