Oklaboy,

I think you hit this right on the head. It wouldn't surprise me to see this same subject discussed behind closed doors in many DOW agencies across the country in due time. The technology advancements are taking the primitive out of the defined seasons and the true intent is being blurred by this.

Sadly, I think you are wrong about this. The DOW doesn't care about that. I just posted an article about Kansas taking a vote to allow hunters to put scopes on there muzzleloaders next year. This problem, if it is a problem is getting worse.

I just found this thread and I just gotta give my 2% of a buck. First thing to realize is that Mr. bridges is making a living touting the virtues of modern muzzleloaders. He has unfortunately written several articles bashing traditional guns even though for years previous to this he was an advocate of hunting with traditional guns.
I know this will likely draw some giggles but I would not hesitate to kill a deer at 100 yards with a patched round ball. I know guys that have killed deer at ranges in escess of 50 yards with smoothbore muzzleloaders and not by pure happenstance.
Last fall I cleanly took a nice 6 point (eastern count) at a range of 83 long paces. (rifled gun)The .570 ball entered behind his right shoulder and exited through his left shoulder, breaking the shoulder joint and dumping him where he stood. his lungs were completely destroyed!
I have no beef with anyones choice of weapon. If you preferr to use an inline get after it! There is no doubt that it is easier to load and more familiar to a number of hunters. But I also agree with the point of having a traditional black powder season. When these muzzleloader seasons were originally set up it was in this spirit that they were devised. Go ahead and use an inline rifle (the concept actually predates cartridge guns) but take the scope off and use open sights or use the scoped inline during the regular rifle season. I'm certainly not trying to offend anyone but I actually sold a custom Rem. M700 in 7mm rem mag a couple seasons back because I enjoy the challenge of hunting with a "primitive" weapon more than a modern weapon. We all hunt for differant reasons and there is room for all.

Here's the way I see it,like it or not. The modern inline muzzleloaders are what's attracting hunters to muzzleloaders in the 1st place. Same thing with compound bows in relation to bowhunting. We,as a group, are much stronger in numbers because of this, thus, have more voting and legislative power to influince elected officials. The bottom line is we,as hunters/shooters need to stick together in order to better combat the antis. Now people that originally come to the sport of muzzleloading, same with bowhunting, use the most efficent, modern equipment they can find. Usually this is due to ability to hunt more/longer but a LOT of the time,it's because they've lost that magical feeling of excitement when hunting with modern rifles or slug guns. I've noticed a trend of these people, myself included, once they've mastered the challenge of stepping down, they start to lose that feeling with modern "primitive" equipment. That's when they go full circle and take up more traditional equipment within muzzleloading and bowhunting areas. That's when they switch to traditional muzzleloaders instead of inlines, and longbow or recurve instead of the latest speedbow compounds. Naturally I'm talking about people who truly love to hunt and the outdoors,as people that just hunt for meat only don't particularly care 1 way or the other. I firmly believe that any new blood coming into our sport is much better than none. Except for history reenactors, the vast majority of true primitive shooters/hunters have evolved from more modern styles.
Now,with my limited education on writing/grammer/english,I'll never make a gun/hunting writer, but I feel I've seen enough regular people to form solid basis-not like gunwriters who have unlimited budgets, sponsered products/companies or other gunwriters in contact with. In fact,I closely relate a lot of the BIG name gunwriters to regular joe hunters/shooters as I do politicitions to regular voters on the street. They seem to forget that not all of us can afford 3,000$-4,000$ for a scope to be mounted on hunting rifle and so forth. They've sort of lost contact with the rest of us,and just have reader response and manufacturer's figures to go on. Sometimes, they are even forced to downplay defects in design, features, and craftsmanship due to these sponsers. You may wonder why this last part of my rant is off-subject but THAT'S why forums like this 1 is so important-it gives us regular joes a chance to compare notes and share experience. Only in this way can we share opinions nationwide.
