I wish everyone a happy and safe holiday season. It’s a great time of year to spend with friends and family!
For the past two weeks we have been fishing practically every day. Luckily the fishing has been good. On the top of the list ahs been the very good sailfish action. The key has been to be in the right spot at the right time. Fishing practically every day allows you to keep track of where the fish have been. Also keeping in touch with the other boats gives you vital information as well. We have been averaging 3 to 5 sailfish a day and our best day was 6 out of 10 hookups.
We have had very little, if any, current. Current can be critical to having the sailfish cooperate. Even with no current, the sailfish have been biting, and if we get a strong north current, the sailfish bite may explode. Current is a dynamic force and is partially based upon the Gulfstream, wind condition and outfall from the mainland. You may not have any current in the morning and all of a sudden the current starts flowing. You may also not have any current off of Miami, but have ripping north current off of Key Biscayne. With the amount of sailfish that we have been seeing and catching, the bite is going to go off the charts when the conditions are right.

Besides sailfish, we have also been catching a fair amount of dolphin. The dolphin has been eating the live baits from the kites quite regularly, and it’s not uncommon to end up with a dozen or so dolphin by the end of the day. There have also been some kingfish around, and having bait at mid depth or lower will usually produces a few kings. Also setting up shallower that 130 feet will get you a few kingfish bites as well. If your targeting kings, make sure you are using a short wire leader.

We have our first tarpon trip tonight, and the preliminary report is good. The shrimp have started to run and the tarpon are eating shrimp. The tarpon have been seen and caught by Haulover Inlet as well as Government Cut. Hopefully we’ll have some luck on our first tarpon trip of the season.

January is already filling up. We have 22 trips already booked, but we have room for more, so give me a shout and let’s go them. Just as a note, last January was an absolutely great month for sailfish!
