| Pine Island Sound Weekly Fishing Reports Hi, Capt Glenn reporting that fishing is super hot for tarpon, snook, redfish and trout. Tarpon are really biting well on most trips with 1 to 3 hookups per trip. These tarpon are averaging 80 to 100lbs although there are some real brutes mixed in of 150 to over 200lbs. The fish are being found both inside on the deep flats and outside off the beaches. Tarpon are hitting both live threadfin herring and live crabs drifted behind the boat around 50 to 75 yards. The average fight lasts around 20 to 30 minutes. The tarpon jump about 8 to 9 times per fight. Tarpon fishing is at its peak in the month of June. If you are thinking about a trip the month of June is the time to book your trip. Snook, although it's catch and release, are biting extremely well in the Sound. Sunday's trip resulted in 6 snook from 26" to 24". A lot of the snook are well over the 34" maximum. Live greenbacks free lined around structure will be blasted by a snook. Redfish are also hitting very well. Sunday's trip resulted in 4 reds from 18" to 24". We also had a brute of a red that broke 30lb Power Pro line. The reds are being caught in the same places as the snook. Small live greenbacks floated on a cajun thunder cork or freelining one near structure or under mangrove trees will produce. Red fishing will get hotter and hotter as the weather keeps getting hotter. Sea trout fishing is nothing short of spectacular. It took about 30 minutes of fishing to catch a 2 man limit. The limit is 4 fish per person. Sea trout can be caught on just about any live or artificial bait. They readily hit jigs, top water plugs and spoons. I catch most of my trout on live greenbacks floated on a cajun thunder cork. Other species of fish being caught are Spanish mackeral. The mackeral have been running very large. On a trip last week fishing for tarpon my client caught a mackeral that was 34" long. We have also caught bluefish up to 4lbs. Jacks, ladyfish and small sharks round out the list. I have been seeing some large sharks mostly lemon sharks in the Sound. Well that does it for now. Thanks Marc |
