Springtime colors

What colors do people tend to use in the early fly fishing season? I haven't figured out if its best to be flashy and bright, or stick with more earth-tone type colors.

I like to stick to crawdad colors early and then go to some kind of shad pattern

I prefer the neutral colors in early spring conditions. You have to think what's moving through the water at this time (midge and pupae). Also, water should be running very clear in the pre-runoff days. Clear water means realistic patterns. It's also a must to fish small sizes and light leaders to land these picky fish. I prefer midge patterns in 22-26 sizes. My most productive patterns are red thread midges, black, olive, Black w/ red. Also remember the fish will put forth very little effort to feed. You need to put the fly right in front of a fish's mouth to entice a strike.

Tight lines
