massive fish kill at Lake Elmer in Kingfisher Oklahoma

I received a phone call from my brother on Monday telling me he was at Lake Elmer in Kingfisher and that there was a massive fish kill. He said the lake had turned over and that it looked like ALL of the fish in the lake had died--every single one of them.

I could tell by his voice that he as absolutely SICK at the sight of all those dead fish -- Huge flathead catfish, 10 pound bass, carp and shad everywhere. I asked him to please take pictures and video for me but he didn't have a camera with him.

After some prodding he returned to the lake with a camera and a video camera. Below are some of the pictures he took of the fish kill which he said he was told was caused by H2S gas. I'm not real familiar with lake turnover and I'm not familiar with H2S gas at all, so please forgive me if those details are incorrect.

I will be uploading some video of the fish kill at the lake shortly, but I have not yet had a chance to view it or transfer it to digital format.

In this picture you can see lots of dead shad and dead carp along with a pretty good sized catfish.

Here is another huge catfish along with a couple more smaller catfish that were also casualties of the lake turnover.

As you can see in the pictures it is pretty brutal, however I didn't see any bass, crappie, or perch in any of those pictures. He did tell me that it was much worse on the other side of the lake and that the wind had blown everything over there before he returned with his camera so he was unable to really get a better representation of just how bad the fish kill was.

Hopefully the video will shed some more light on the fish kill and whether or not it was actually as bad as he had initially said it was.

That is a very sad sight. You need to e-mail Gene Gilleland at the wildlife department. I think that is how you spell his name.
