My state (Wa) sucks and so this statement doesn't apply to me. A couple years ago, a friend of mine decided to do a college project on the sound patterns of a gunshot. Using these sound patterns, he manufactured 3 suppressors for his 7mm bolt-action. One was the "optimal" profile and the other 2 were made to false patterns 1% in either direction as proof of concept. Even though it was for a controlled school project, he was charged with 3 counts of manufacturing and possession of a firearm suppressor. Each count was worth 10-25 years in prison.

Yes, he was. IIRC two charges were dropped and he got minimum for the third. The funny thing is that after he made them and tested them (in a sound room with sandbags) he sawed them in half to show their guts. I wasn't that great of friends with him. I only really knew him for 1 quarter in college as he was in a class of mine.

In deed. Murderers get away every day but some kids having some fun, drinking beer or smoking a joint go to jail.
