Coming in spring: a new area to hunt turkeys
Oklahoma’s newest public hunting area will be open for spring turkey season.

The Oklahoma Department of Wildlife Conservation recently bought a 3,770-acre ranch in Woods County that will become the Cimarron Hills Wildlife Management Area.

The Cimarron Hills WMA is located 15 miles from another recent acquisition by the state Wildlife Department, the Cimarron Bluff Wildlife Management Area in Harper County.

The state Wildlife Department paid $3 million for the Woods County ranch. The money came from income generated by the Legacy Permit and federal wildlife restoration funds.

The Cimarron Hills WMA will offer deer, turkey and quail hunting. It also is home to lesser prairie chickens.

It is the fifth land purchase by the state Wildlife Department since sportsmen were required three years ago to pay $5 annually for a Legacy Permit.

I think its great. Most don't think you can do well on public land but I've hunted it before and have seen plenty of deer and/or turkey.

The animals I like to kill live there.
