What kind of dog do you hunt with and why?

Just curious what type of dogs you own and why? As for myself, I have always hunted over labs. I like the versitility they have in the field and variety of birds you can hunt for. Additionally, I like the fact they have a huge amount of desire, are good family dogs, and very willing to please. It's also a bonus if you can find one out of a good pointing line.

I don't own a hunting dog, unless you count my beagle. All he hunts is his own scent in the backyard.

One of these days I'm going to take him rabbit hunting because I guess Beagles are supposed to be good rabbit dogs.

I'd probably end up "accidentally" shooting the beagle. That little turd would have had a tragic accident already if it wasn't for my two girls! (okay, that's not true, I really love the little guy)

I've only hunted pointers mostly, and an irish setter or two.

oucorry can respond. He owns several bird dogs...or at least he used to!

Your lab doesn't point does he?

best quail dog i ever had was a english setter, he would break and go around in front of running birds to cut them off. never had a dog to do that before

bigred,
Did he do that naturally, or was there some sort of training you did?

pointers for me but that english setter we had was unreal. No we didn't train him to do that he was 5 or 6 when we got him, so he had already learned all the good stuff we just showed him all the bad stuff

You ought to bring your shotgun and we could see if we can splatter some geese. Geese are unbelievably thick here right now. I guess the last cold front brought em down from Montana. I'm heading out this weekend to hunt on some private ground on the South Platte near Fort Morgan. I'll let you know if they're still flying.

I'd recommend not stowing the shotgun in your carry on luggage.

They tend to frown upon that from what I understand!
