Wiper bait??

I was talking to this guy the other night about wiper fishing and we have both experienced good success with tight-lining from the bank over sandy points/flats. I normally employ this method and suspend a night crawler a couple feet above the bottom. This guy swears by doing the same, but using Mussells for bait? He said he buys frozen mussells from the grocery store. Have any of you heard of using anything like this for wiper bait?

what the heck is a Wiper?

I'm guessing you are talking about Hybrid Bass?

I've never tight lined for hybrids, but I don't see why it wouldn't work.

I've used mussels for bait a couple of times when catfishing, but never for hybrids.

Correct, on the hybrids. Guess they call em different names based on geography. If you've never tight lined for them, you need to get your butt out to Canton and fish on the east side (just north of swim beach). Tie a 2 oz. pyramid sinker on bottom with hook about 2.5 feet above and thread on a crawler. Cast that dude out as far as you can (don't be afraid to walk out in water to gain distance, then free-spool back to the bank). I guarantee you'll have the time of your life. This is a very good method to use anywhere when the wind picks up and pushes waves directly in your face. Schools of bait fish are pushed by the waves close to shore and hybrids will be quick to follow.

well then bigdaddy you'll just have to make a trip down here and show me how it's done.

Speaking of, why don't we set a time and go down there with Berry. He's got a cabin there and knows how to reel 'em in.

I'd like to spend three or four days camping down there in the spring too, but we could go for a night and come back. It's not the hour drive from me that it used to be though.

Ryan's friend Mitchell Turner also tears up the hybrids and walleyes down there. I'm pretty sure they fish from the rocks at the damn most of the time but using the same method...
