Bearded Hens??

I've frequently heard of people shooting bearded hens and was curious so I checked out the NWTFwebsite. It claims that up to 20% of hens have beards. I wonder if this is from bad genes, hormone imbalance, etc.? Have any of you witnessed this firsthand?

Birdman, I have called up loads of bearded hens but have never shot one. I have called up more Rio hens with beards than any other sub species. The beards on hens that i have seen are not very long and are very thin but they do have them.

Bearded hens? Maybe they have their own circus and these bearded hens are the stars of the freak show.
