1st open water trip of the year

Well, it's been a tough week and I managed to hit the water for a day on Tuesday. Last thursday I got laid off at work and everything just kinda went south since. Glad it is just a tempoary layoff. I'll go back to work as soon as UAW works out a contract with American Axle and ends the strike. Anyway, enough pitty. let's talk walleye fishing.

I headed over to a little lake by Lexington Nebraska called Johnson's Lake. Didn't take the boat and fished out of my waders. I fished about 3 hrs here with only 3 hits and 1 short(12") walleye landed. It was pretty slow so I moved to the west and hit a few areas along the canal that feads johnson's. I should have went west in the 1st place cause I ended up doing pretty decent. 1st check I hit, some guys already there said it was slow and they only had 1 keeper. I pick my spot and them WHAM, walleye or sauger on my 1st 6 casts. These guys were looking at me like I was WHO-DENNE! I fished here for about 2 hours and ended up catching about 12 or so. I had only one that would have kept but he came off at the bank. I then headed to another spot and hit it for about 2 hours. I landed about another 8-10 eyes and saugers there. Didn't land a keeper here either but did have one on that felt like a big catfish or a big walleye. I ended the day trying a few points out and caught another 7-8 eyes. I think I ended up catching around 25 or so eyes. I was mainly throwing 1/4oz jigs tipped with 3" Yum and Powerbait grubs.

Not a bad 1st trip and it allowed me to get out of the house and get my mind off of WORK!!!!!!!!!!

I mainly used Chartreuse with glitter flake. Caught a few on white and firetiger too.

Was really nice getting out and not thinking about work!

Made a trip out again today. Caught about 15 or so shorts and no keepers. Like earlier in the week, I lost another really nice fish. Not sure what the deal is but it is getting a little irritating! Wind really hurt my odds today, I saw 3 limits caught but by the time I could fit into that section to fish, the wind came up 100 mph! Hoping to get the boat on the water next weekend. That will sure even out the odds a little.

You're fairing better than i have. Hit up 2 reservoirs Saturday and barely beat off the skunk. Fished out of a boat both places throwing every option imaginable (harnesses, jigs, floaters, three ways with rapalas, minnows, etc..). Fished deep, rock lines, humps, flats, everything imaginable and never got so much as a bite. Water temp ranged from 45 - 47°. Second place tried about the same and ended up catching two rainbows on accident.. Water is still a bit cold for active eyes, but should be prime in just a few weeks.

Did manage to slip off to a farm pond the other day. Faired pretty well, spent alot of time helping out my little girls. But it was fun and they had a blast.

That is PRIME water temps birdman! If you are looking for eyes, find their spawning grounds. Look for deeper water(18-25') near where they spawn. Early mornings are usually a good bet as you can catch them coming off there dirty deed. Try using a jig with a 3-5" shiner, a lindy rig with a 4-5' snell and a red #4 livebait hook, or pitch 3" Grubs. Fishing slow is a must!

Hope this might help you out some,

GOOD LUCK!!!
