Cranks for eyes? Eye4?

Eye4,

Just curious when you experience the best luck with cranks. I've often heard of people being very successful throwing cranks on rock breaks, points, rip rap at night. Do you think this is more of a result of time of day or limited light penetration. If you believe light penetration, would you guess overcast / rough water days would be just as productive as night?

I generally have my best luck on cranks when the fish start moving to deeper water in June. I don't do a whole lot of casting cranks for walleye. What I have done is usually at night on windblown points or along rocks. There is an occasion or two that I will cast cranks into flooded willows during the day but not very often. Trial and error is your best bet on locating and catching eyes on cranks.

March!!!! At night. I generally fish from around 2200 hrs til about 0400. I can't wait til early spring!

Sorry about the first pic.It was taken by a fella who had never used my camera.
The second pic has a 1 litre bottle of diet dew in it to show size of fish.
I know using cranks in 38-40 something degree water goes against traditional walleye wisdom but it sure knocks hell outta the big fish for me every year. I have broken 10 pounds several times, I keep looking to break 15.
I even catch a few big 'eyes on my fly rod each spring swinging streamers

That's a great fish bamboo. We go eye fishing every year and seem to be getting better each year. I don't really know the rhyme or reason why we catch fish when we do. I just don't get out enough.

I love a BIG Rogue fished s-l-o-w at night. The walleyes are getting going now through the ice. I do spend a bit of time chasing them in the winter, but I really like open water fishing for them the best.
The crazy thing is most guys think you can't get these fish to chase in cold water or that ya hafta fish a small fathead minnow on a splitshot rig.
We have a slot limit on one of the waters I hunt big eyes on and it has really done wonders. 5 fish limit 15-20 inches with one fish over 28.
I have kept a couple big fish but now I just put them back to continue the spawn. The hen in the first pic is still swimming! I hope to see her this spring again!
