Walleye from shore

Walleye4 or anyone,

I fish this body of water in early season for staging, pre-spawn, and spawning eyes with great success. We primarily fish a couple rocky points that are pretty shallow (5-8') that run into deeper water (12-16'). In the past we have been very successful vertical jigging orange / chart. twisters tipped with minnows or crawlers. We also do well on floating jigheads trailing crawlers. The lake is closed to boaters later this year than normal, and we'll be forced to fish from shore the first several weeks. Do you have any suggestions for shore fishing. The shallow water makes crankbaits a bit difficult to fish as most of my walleye baits are fairly deep diving.

I've had luck on rocky areas just like that with a small crawfish crank bait. Me and a couple of buddies caught several large walleye like that more than once.

yeah, you might try a Mann's one minus. I don't know about eyes but they are deadly on bass in the early spring. They only run about a foot deep so you can fish them real shallow.

Good question man! I do a ton of bank fishing in the spring & fall for walleye. I generally will just throw what ever size jig the wind and current will let me. I fish the canal system alot that runs from Big Mac down to Lexington Nebraska. There is always current when I am hitting the checks and inlets. Here I generally throw my homemade 5/16oz jigs with 3" twister tails. If I am fishing the points or the dams, I like to throw 1/8oz twister tails if the wind is not blowing 100 mph. Otherwise I will use 1/4 oz. Colors I would start with would be either a Orange jighead with a 3" Chartreuse/glitter twister or a Pink head/white twister. These are the 2 jigs a like to throw in the spring.

If you are wanting to use bait, go with shiners in the 4-6" range if you can find them. The way I will rig for this is I put a egg sinker above a crane swivel(barrel swivel will work too) and then tie on a 3 ft leader of 6# line with a #4 or #6 red Gamagatsu(sp!) hook. Use just enough weight to keep your bait on bottom. Just make sure to let the fish run a few seconds before setting the hook.

Hope this helps you get some eyes!
